Brian C.B. Barnes, Ed.L.D., M.Div., Ed.M., is the co-founder and CEO of TandemEd, an entity that supports African-American communities to lead their own strategies and actions for social change in tandem with courageous institutions.  His social change philosophy includes the belief that public and private institutions best impact society through affirming and aligning with the leadership of the communities that they aim to serve. To this end, he also serves as a thought leader and consultant for non-profits and philanthropies, and his writing includes recent 2017 contributions in the Stanford Social Innovation Review entitled “Shifting Philanthropy from Charity to Justice” and “Paid in Full: How to Reorient Philanthropic Investments for Justice-Oriented Collective Action and Impact.”

Dr. Barnes has previously applied his expertise in equity approaches as a chief officer in the State of Tennesee’s turnaround school district, instructor and coach at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and district leader of faith-based and community partnerships at Boston Public Schools.  Recently, he was honored and selected as a member of the 2017 Class of Presidential Leadership Scholars sponsored by several U.S. Presidential Centers. Dr. Barnes holds both a doctorate and master’s in education from Harvard University; a Master of Divinity from Andover-Newton Theological School; and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Morehouse College. Brian is married to Keishana Barnes and is the father of three beautiful children, one son and two daughters.

Dr. Barnes has a background in education leadership, youth program development, and community relations. Brian’s previous roles include Chief Community Officer of the Tennessee Achievement School District’s direct-run schools; district leader for Boston Public Schools (BPS) Faith-Based/Community Partnerships, middle school leader and teacher; and, and instructor and coach at the Harvard Graduate School of Education on leadership with racial equity. Dr. Barnes holds a Doctor of Education Leadership and master’s degree from Harvard University, a Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Morehouse College.

TandemEd offers consulting services that both focus on racial issues and create equity using a collective impact approach rooted in community leadership and institutional responsiveness. We apply our national experience to guide neighborhoods through the process of collaboration, innovation, intervention, and ultimately, the promotion of community as a social foundation of immeasurable value. TandemEd utilizes asset-based community development and inter-organization collaboration to build on the existing strengths of each neighborhood to achieve collective impact and realize broad social goals.

TandemEd’s clients include a wide range of organizations that all impact community wellbeing and that desire to contribute as much as possible to the lives of the people whom they affect.  It works with philanthropic institutions, nonprofits, local government, and education agencies to strengthen their organizations to be responsive to community leadership, and we collaborate with community members and grass roots organizations to define and implement their goals with fidelity. We additionally focus on refining the narrative and developing the necessary resources and capacity for our clients and their allies to proactively align resources and drive lasting change.
